Smithsonian, Pottery, and Hands-On Work
This year, thanks to our client and friend, Kevin Lehman, we had the chance to visit beneath a Smithsonian Museum where thousands of centuries-old works of pottery are stored. Kevin is the artist and potter who runs the Lancaster Creative Factory (@lancastercreativefactory), a non-profit which seeks to cultivate creativity through art in order to encourage problem-solving, healing, and transformation that helps build a healthy community.
That’s Sal in the video, one of Kevin's colleagues, teaching a studio class. These guys are incredible artists and teachers. And getting to learn about those ancient pottery pieces alongside them was educational to say the least. Holding such an artifact made by fellow humans as far back as 1200 CE was mind-blowing. To think of the work they put in, spinning hand-made clay wheels, wielding earth into vessels, stoking kilns to fire them.
People who often use their hands repetitively can encounter wrist, hand, elbow, and even shoulder pain. And symptoms like carpal tunnel syndrome or inflammation of the ulnar nerve. That's where our hands come in, with soft-tissue and joint-based inputs that can support mobility, pain relief, and preservation of strength. Its been a privilege to have both these guys in the Excelsior clinic.
Stay tuned for more of Kevin's story coming soon.
